Did Tarkin outrank? It’s a question that’s been on everyone’s mind. Well, the answer is yes and no. On one hand, Tarkin was a Grand Moff in the Galactic Empire, which made him one of the highest-ranking officers in the Imperial Navy. On the other hand, he was still subordinate to Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. So while he had considerable power and authority, he wasn’t quite at the top of the food chain. In short, you could say Tarkin had a lot of clout but not quite enough to outrank his superiors!

Did Tarkin Outrank Vader? [Solved]

Vader had a lot of respect for Tarkin - it was obvious. The only time Tarkin outranked Vader was when he was in the Death Star or within Tarkin’s Oversector, which he probably was since Tarkin was Grand Moff of the Outer Rim Oversector - the biggest one.

  1. Grand Moff Tarkin: Grand Moff Tarkin was a high-ranking Imperial military officer in the Galactic Empire, and one of the most powerful figures in the Empire. He was known for his ruthlessness and ambition, and was ultimately responsible for overseeing the construction of the Death Star.

  2. Imperial Ranks: The Imperial ranks were divided into two categories: Moffs (governors) and Grand Moffs (senior governors). Grand Moffs held more authority than regular Moffs, but were still subordinate to Emperor Palpatine himself.

  3. Outranking Other Officers: As a Grand Moff, Tarkin outranked all other officers in the Imperial military hierarchy except for Emperor Palpatine himself. This meant that he had authority over all other officers, including Darth Vader and Admiral Piett.

  4. Authority Over Regions: As a senior governor of an entire region of space, Tarkin had ultimate authority over any planets or systems within his jurisdiction, including Alderaan which he famously destroyed with the Death Star superweapon.

Tarkin outranked pretty much everyone. He was a Grand Moff, which is the highest rank in the Imperial Navy. So yeah, he was pretty much top dog!
