But what exactly is the difference between these two groups? Well, let me break it down for you. Sunnis are followers of the traditional Islamic teachings while Shiites follow a more modern interpretation of Islam. Both groups have their own unique beliefs and practices, but unfortunately, this has led to some serious clashes over the years. Yikes! It’s clear that this is an incredibly complex situation with no easy answers - but one thing’s for sure: it needs to be addressed if peace is ever going to be achieved in Egypt.

Well, you could say that in Egypt, Islam is the name of the game. Nearly everyone’s a Sunni and follows the Maliki school of thought - but all legal schools are represented. There’s a small Shi’a population too, though.
Egypt: Egypt is a country located in the northeast corner of Africa, and is home to over 95 million people. It has a long and rich history, with ancient civilizations such as the Pharaohs and the Greeks having left their mark on the country.
Sunni: Sunni Islam is one of two major branches of Islam, with approximately 85% of Muslims worldwide belonging to this branch. Sunnis believe that Muhammad was the last prophet sent by God, and that his teachings should be followed in order to live a righteous life.
Shia: Shia Islam is the other major branch of Islam, with approximately 15% of Muslims worldwide belonging to this branch. Shias believe that Muhammad’s son-in-law Ali was appointed by God as his successor after Muhammad’s death, and that Ali’s descendants should lead Islamic society in order to live a righteous life.
Egypt & Sunni/Shia Relations: In Egypt, Sunnis make up around 90% of the population while Shias make up around 10%. Despite this difference in numbers between these two branches of Islam, there has been peaceful coexistence between them for centuries in Egypt due to mutual respect for each other’s beliefs and practices within society at large
